Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to change into a new species. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist student who coined the term “transmutation” to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the idea of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student. Recently evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living organisms develop traits that enhance their chances of survival or ability to produce offspring. As time passes the genetic variability could lead to the emergence of entirely new physical or biological traits in the population. This change in gene frequencies is called natural selection, and it is the main driver of evolutionary changes. Non-genetic changes, such as an increase in muscle mass due to exercise or diet, cannot be considered to be evolution since they aren't passed on to future generations. Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the test of time and a multitude of scientific tests Creationists have taken advantage of the idea that evolution is controversial and argue that it should not be taught in school. The most popular type of creationist is known as the YEC. They believe that God created the universe exactly in the way that is described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the creation's six days is literal and that the universe and the life on Earth was created only recently. OECs are less well known however they are as committed to their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is a lie. Both forms of creationism deny that scientific principles such as biogenesis and natural selection could explain how life started on Earth. They claim that evolution isn't possible because it requires an extraordinary event, and that the scientists who founded modern science shied away from miracles due to fear of losing credibility. Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution and also special creation and call their view “theistic evolution.” This is also referred to as “continuous evolutionism” or the “evolution of created kinds.” In this view, God creates the original species and allows them to evolve over time. Then, these evolutionary changes will result in new species similar to the original ones. Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in a single event known as the Great Flood. Creationists believe that the original species were all created at the same time, and that they evolved gradually afterward. They also reject the idea of abiogenesis and argue that the emergence of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is not possible. In general, the creationists are opposed to the teaching of evolution in schools. This is supported by a myriad of professional associations, including the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education and the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Certain scientists and educational institutions are, however, more flexible and allow both evolution and creationism to be included in their curriculum. What is Creationism in Korea? When people think of creationism, they often think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolution movement. The publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their textbooks. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body which is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) is the one who has led this effort. STR has won its first victory in removing instances of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor, the Archeopteryx, from textbooks. It is now focusing on the removal of excerpts from Darwin's infamous finch research and on human evolution too. STR claims to have the support of 4,000 families and members. The goal, according to STR is to cleanse the world of what it calls “atheist materialism” which portrays a negative view for students. It also aims at countering the influence of American Creationists in the United States. A survey of trainees in biology revealed that half of them did not believe evolution. The causes aren't clear, but may include religious beliefs and the lack of full-time creation scientists across the country. The KACR has achieved many things in the past through lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly journal called Creation and a book. Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences that has a creationist viewpoint, which has sparked interest among college students. In 1991, a professor and minister started teaching Creation Science in one university and it is taught to this day. On August 6-7 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. The event was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from outside the country, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin addressed thousands of people. KACR members and KACR have also presented lectures on creation science in prestigious seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
